Vincent Trocheck is a player who was a very good free agent signing for the New York Rangers, and in all likelihood, he has skated his last game as a Blueshirt. It is something fans expected to happen during the season, but things don't always work out the way you want. While he remained a heart-and-soul leader, the Rangers' current trajectory and his high market value make a summer separation feel inevitable.
Expectations
Trocheck was one of the many Rangers who disappointed in 2024-25, and the fear was that his 59-point campaign was the start of a permanent decline. The expectation for 2025-26 was for him to play with more fight and consistency, helping drag the team back into relevance. especially with a full season alongside childhood friend J.T. Miller. The Rangers needed him to be the glue guy who could stabilize a top six in flux, and a veteran leader who set the tone.
Performance
On the surface, Vincent Trocheck improved, tallying 16 goals and 37 assists for 53 points in 67 games. On a per-game basis (0.79 P/GP), this was actually a significant step up from the 0.72 P/GP he posted the year prior. However, he dealt with a terrifying bacterial lung infection that required surgery and a week-long hospital stay early in the season, which makes his eventual return and Olympic gold medal win with Team USA even more impressive.
Under the hood, however, the metrics via Evolving-Hockey tell a different story of a player struggling to drive play as he once did:

While his faceoff dominance remained elite (56.9%), his role shifted throughout the year as the Rangers experimented with J.T. Miller and rookie Noah Laba. He was average by his high standards, but considering the team's poor play and his health struggles, he showed remarkable resilience. The good thing for the Rangers is that there are many teams that will look at him overcoming a weird health situation, winning Olympic gold, and being a cost-effective veteran producer. The hope is that they can find a handful of teams to generate a true bidding war.

Trocheck’s value may never be higher than it is right now. He proved at the Olympics that he is an elite high leverage specialist, and with a thin 2026 free agent class, President and General Manager Chris Drury reportedly could see the price for Trocheck rise.
